Beginning in 1987, Frederick’s practice has been focused on insurance coverage matters with particular emphasis on appellate cases. He has argued appellate cases before the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Sixth Appellate District Courts of Appeal as well as the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit and has handled appellate matters before the California Supreme Court. His insurance practice has involved both first and third party insurance, including property, homeowners, general liability, errors and omissions, multiperil, automobile, automobile dealership, aviation, warranty and various other coverages. He also specializes in insurance guaranty association law and insurer insolvency matters and has represented the California, Oregon and Pennsylvania Insurance Guaranty Associations. A trained mediator, he uses his negotiation skills to efficiently resolve complex coverage and insurance related disputes for the benefit of his clients.

Although born in New York, he spent the first 18 years of his life in Hong Kong before coming to the United States to attend the University of Southern California. At USC, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Communication before moving on to law school. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law where he represented the school as a member of the Moot Court Honors Program in four national moot court competitions. While in law school, he clerked for a prominent insurance defense firm, but even then concentrated his work with the firm’s “Of Counsel” handling insurance coverage matters. After completing law school, he joined the insurance coverage department of another Los Angeles insurance law firm, before joining with his partners to form what is now Black, Compean & Hall in 1991. Besides his law practice, he enjoys raising his three sons and actively volunteering as a Cub Scout leader. He is also an avid mountain biker, certified Master SCUBA diver, skier, bowler and photographer.
